The Whatman 10447724 Elutrap electroelution kit for isolating and purifying nucleic acids and proteins has an elution device to hold samples, an electrophoresis chamber that can hold up to four elution devices, and adjustable membranes. The elution device has an adjustable membrane at each end to help optimize elution volumes, and holds samples after the molecules have been filtered through the membranes. The elution device is placed into the electrophoresis chamber, which simultaneously holds up to four elution traps. The kit can be used with most horizontal gel electrophoresis chambers. This kit uses electroelution to isolate nucleic acids and proteins from agarose or polyacrylamide gel slices. It can also be used to concentrate dilute solutions.
The kit purifies nucleic acids 14 base pairs (bp) to 150 kilo bases (kb), and proteins larger than 3 to 5 kilo Daltons (kD). The elution device measures 42 x 16 x 9 cm. The electrophoresis chamber measures 18 x 3 x 3 cm (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) The system requires an electrophoresis power supply and gel slices (sold separately), and users must make buffers according to system protocol. Some assembly is required.
Electroelution systems are used to extract nucleic acid or a protein sample from an electrophoresis gel. The electroelution device is placed into an electrophoresis chamber and molecules migrate from gels into a trap area formed by membranes. This method can be used to recover DNA fragments, and for concentration of dilute solutions.
