The Triplett 9055 digital multimeter (also known as a multitester) with noncontact voltage sensor is an auto-ranging, average-sensing digital multimeter that measures voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, frequency, duty cycles, sound levels, light levels, and humidity in electrical, electronics, and heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC/R) maintenance applications. The meter comes with a set of detachable test leads. A built-in sound meter measures sound levels in decibels relative to carrier (dBc) and an integral light meter with silicon sensor measures light levels in lux, for checking noise and light levels in environments such as factories, hospitals, offices, and schools. The noncontact voltage detector senses AC voltage from a distance. The meter also has a sensor that measures relative humidity and ambient temperature. The included thermocouple probe takes surface temperature measurements. The meter measures duty cycles to 95%, indicating the percent of time a circuit is on. An audible continuity sensor confirms a circuit conducts electricity, and a diode test detects proper functioning of a circuit’s diodes. The LCD is backlit for readability in low light. The meter's internal memory stores maximum and minimum values for a session for future recall. The relative mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings so that multiple readings can be compared. The hold function keeps a reading on the LCD, even after the meter is disconnected. The unit operates on one 9V battery (installed) and automatically turns off after a period of nonuse to conserve battery life. A low-battery indicator signals when the meter's batteries need to be replaced.
This average-sensing, or average-responding, meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has an undistorted waveform. When turned on, the meter is in auto-ranging mode and automatically selects the correct operating range for the property being measured. It can be switched to manual-ranging mode, which allows the operator to choose the appropriate operating range. The LCD has a 4,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 3,999 units (3-3/4 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standard 61010 and is certified for Category III installations up to 1,000V, which covers items used with enclosed building circuit installations (such as service panel parts, branch circuits, and fixed installations that are connected directly to a building's AC power supply), and Category IV installations up to 600V, which covers measurements at the source of the low-voltage supply (such as electricity meters and overcurrent protection devices).
