The Starrett Versatix MP bimetal band saw blade has a Versatix tooth design, a positive rake angle, and a raker tooth set for minimizing pinching and handling intermittent cutting of structural steel. The teeth are made of triple-tempered M-42 high-speed cobalt steel with an alloy steel backing strip that resists fatigue. The blade can make cuts in structural shapes, tubular shapes, and tubular bundles. It has extra blade clearance for minimizing binding and stress during cutting. The Versatix tooth design provides increased strength and reduces stripping compared to standard blades. It has a raker tooth set, which alternates between left-leaning, right-leaning, and unset teeth. The blade has a variable pitch, so the tooth size and gullet depth vary in order to reduce noise levels and vibrations and to remove chips efficiently. The blade is good for use with manual pull-down band saw machines where uncontrolled feed rates can overload standard blades.
Band saw blades are long, continuous bands of metal that loop around the wheels of band saws and can make straight or curved cuts in metal, wood, stone, plastic, and other materials. When purchasing band saw blades, consider the application, as this will affect the tooth rake, tooth set, pitch, and size of the blade. Band saw blades are available with a positive rake angle or a straight (also called zero) rake angle, and with a raker, wavy, or alternate tooth set. Pitch (the number of teeth per inch or per 25.4 mm) affects the type of finish and may be constant or variable. Band saw blades are available in different lengths and widths to fit the requirements of specific band saws.
The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
