Key Features

  • Used with the Sandvik Coromant Finishing Long Edge Cutter insert holder for light side finishing on steel in difficult-to-average machining conditions
  • GC1030 grade is a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coating of titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) and titanium nitride (TiN) over carbide that provides shock resistance without limiting wear resistance and performs well in unstable conditions and when milling sticky materials such as low-carbon steel
  • Light-machining (PL) chipbreaker helps prevent chip buildup
  • Rectangular shape has strong cutting edges, with geometry designed for side milling
  • Long edge milling cutters offer a high metal removal capacity for deep shoulder milling applications

Product Description

The Sandvik Coromant LDHT GC1030 carbide indexable side milling insert has a rectangular shape, a PL chipbreaker, and provides shock resistance without limiting wear resistance for light finishing of steel in difficult-to-average machining conditions. A combination of carbide and a thin coating of titanium aluminum nitride (TiAlN) and titanium nitride (TiN) applied through physical vapor deposition (PVD) performs well in unstable conditions, and when milling sticky materials such as low-carbon steel. In general, coatings extend insert life and provide better wear resistance than uncoated inserts. PVD coatings maintain a sharper cutting edge than those with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) coatings.

This positive insert is used with the Coromant Finishing Long Edge Cutter insert holder, a screw-style holding system for deep shoulder milling that produces a superior surface finish. The positive insert has a PL chipbreaker for light machining. The insert has a hole in the center, a rectangular shape that provides two strong cutting edges, geometry designed for side milling, and a 15-degree clearance angle.

Milling inserts are coded according to their specific cutting and application capability (e.g., LDHT-19 04 00-PL). Each section of the code represents details of the insert: shape, clearance angle, insert tolerances, combination of chipbreaker and clamp type, cutting edge length, thickness, parallel land and clearance angle (00 for none), and chipbreaker style. Tolerance of the inscribed width (iW) of the insert is + or - 0.0005”. Insert thickness tolerance is + or - 0.001”. Insert shapes and sizes may have different cutting depths, speeds, lead angles, and feed rates. Generally, as the insert size and iW become larger, the maximum cutting depth increases. Cutting depth influences the metal removal rate, the number of cuts, chip evacuation, and power required when using the insert. Indexable inserts are small cutting tools designed to remove material in external and internal cutting applications such as turning, milling, drilling, and grooving. They are held by an insert holder, have multiple cutting edges, and can be rotated when one edge wears down. Multiple inserts can accomplish a variety of cuts in one operation. An insert is either positive or negative, which refers to the rake or clearance angle at which the insert removes material.

Sandvik Coromant produces tools for turning, milling, and drilling. Headquartered in Sweden and represented in 130 countries, the company manufactures tools used throughout the metalworking field, including the automotive and aerospace, die and mold, and general engineering industries.

Matching Inserts to Holders

These inserts are used with the Sandvik Coromant Finishing Long Edge Cutter insert holder, a screw-style holding system. The Coromant Finishing Long Edge Cutter is used in deep shoulder milling, and light finishing applications. The system offers cost efficiency, and good surface finish and precision.
