The PURELL 9691-12 advanced green certified instant hand sanitizer, 8 fl. oz. pump bottle, is an antimicrobial gel that contains 70% ethyl alcohol to help reduce the number of germs on hands, and meets the EcoLogo hand sanitizer standard CCD-170 for its use of bio-based raw materials, environmentally safer ingredients and packaging, and for enhanced recyclability compared to other products in its category. The 8 fl. oz. pump bottle helps dispense small amounts of gel at a time. The hand sanitizer includes four moisturizers to help keep skin hydrated. It is made with ethanol produced with renewable natural resources, and contains no fragrance or dye. The EcoLogo CCD-170 standard also uses European Committee for Standardization (CEN) standards EN 1500 and EN 13727 to verify product effectiveness.

Hand sanitizers (also called hand antiseptics) are liquids, gels, or foams that help reduce the number of germs on hands when a small amount is rubbed into the skin; no rinsing with water or drying with towels is needed. In situations when soap and water are not available, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands, but do not eliminate every kind of pathogenic microorganism. Hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty.
