The Oakton refillable combination silver/sulfide ion selective electrode (ISE) has a solid state sensor for measuring the silver (Ag+) or sulfide (S-2) concentration in sewage, soil, sediment, plating baths, photographic fixing solution, and other aqueous solutions. This combination electrode contains both the measuring half-cell and the reference half-cell to minimize electrostatic interference and provide consistent readings. The solid state sensor allows for dry storage and eliminates the need for membrane replacement. The electrode is available in single-junction models for faster electrolyte flow and double-junction models to protect against silver wire contamination and help prevent clogging in dirty water and solutions with heavy metals or organics. Single-junction models have an epoxy body for impact resistance and durability, and double-junction models have a glass body for an improved seal and resistance to corrosive materials, organic compounds, and solvents. The ISE’s measurement range is 107,900 to 0.01 parts per million (ppm) for silver and 32,100 to 0.003 ppm for sulfide, and the main interfering ion is Hg+2. The electrode operates in temperatures ranging from 0 to 80 degrees C (32 to 176 degrees F) and is for use in solutions with pH ranging from 2 to 12. It is 12mm in diameter and 110mm long, and has a 3-foot cable with Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) connector for attaching to meters with a BNC connection. The electrode comes with polishing strips for the sensor, a 15 mL bottle of electrolyte solution, and a pipette for refilling. The filling solution composition can be adjusted to suit the sample requirements. ISEs respond selectively to ions in the presence of other ions, and they are commonly used for water testing and analyzing biological samples in hydroponics, aquaculture, and agriculture, among other applications.
The electrode is for use with the Oakton Ion 510, pH/Ion 2100 Bench-top, or Ion Acorn meters. It can also be used with any ion meter, or any other meter with a 0.1mV resolution.
An electrode, also called a sensor or probe, is an instrument used with a meter to test and measure parameters of a substance. All electrodes are probes or sensors, but not all probes are electrodes or sensors. Probes, such as temperature probes, are used to penetrate a material for measurement. Ion selective electrodes (ISEs) respond selectively to ions in the presence of other ions. Electrodes are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists in a wide variety of industries, such as aquaculture, agriculture, chemistry, food and beverage, wine-making and water-testing, and for scientific applications. An electrode can be used with a datalogger to assist in temperature measurement.
