The Norton F226 Metalite fiber disc is coated with an 80-grit (fine) aluminum oxide abrasive for light sanding of workpieces before applying paint or primer. The aluminum oxide grit is one of the most common choices for general-purpose sanding, and is more durable than silicon carbide grit. The disc's heavy-duty fiber backing is strong, durable, and tear-resistant for extended product life. The disc attaches to a back-up pad (sold separately) on a right angle grinder using the unthreaded round hole.
Fiber discs are coated, meaning an adhesive is used to attach the abrasive grains to a backing of paper, plastic, or cloth. Grinding or polishing occurs on the face of the disc. They are used for a variety of applications from shaping a part to fine finishing, depending on the grit size. The heavy fiber backing, made of vulcanized cotton fibers that are treated and then pressed under temperature and pressure, forms a very durable, strong, and tear-resistant disc for longer disc life. Low grit numbers like 24 are coarse (with fewer, larger grains) and remove excess material and shape parts. High grit numbers like 100 are fine (with more, smaller grains) and help create a smooth surface finish.
Norton Abrasives manufactures sanding, grinding, and polishing abrasives. The company, founded in 1885, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards 9000 and 14001 for quality and environmental management.
