The Mettler Toledo MS1003S NewClassic precision balance has a capacity of 1020 g and an accuracy of 0.001 g (also called readability), and offers a high-contrast, backlit with large numbers for clear readings. The internal calibration system automatically calibrates the balance based on the temperature, or at a predetermined time, ensuring consistent, accurate measurements. The below-balance weighing hook suspends bulky items beneath the balance for weighing. This balance is rated to IP54 level of protection against dust and splashing water during use.
The balance weighs in 16 different units, tares over the entire weighing range, and displays in seven different languages: German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, and Czech. The built-in time and date function enables work in compliance with good practices in many industries, including food and pharmaceutical. Application modes include piece counting, percent weighing, dynamic weighing, and statistics, and three programmable buttons provide shortcut access for routine tasks. The rear-facing RS232 and USB ports allow for quick connection to a printer, computer, bar code reader, or other peripheral device. Adjustable front feet provide a stable weighing surface, so the balance will not tip under eccentric loads, while overload protection prevents damage to the weighing cell and the balance if too-heavy samples are mistakenly used. An indicator on the front provides quick confirmation that the balance is level prior to use. The high-grade, chemical-resistant, die-cast aluminum housing protects the internal weighing cell from environmental influences and impacts, and reduces the effects of thunderstorms and electromagnetic interference from other equipment that may affect measurement results. The stainless steel weighing pan resists corrosion from spills of most sample materials, and the balance can be cleaned by dismantling the draft shield, without using tools or moving the balance. The glass panels of the draft shield are dishwasher-safe and autoclaveable, and the aluminum housing can be cleaned using most common cleaning agents, including acetone. A protective cover safeguards the balance during storage. The balance is manufactured to ISO 9001 standards, and warrantied by manufacturer for one year.

Balances are measuring instruments used to determine the mass of an object, while scales are used to measure the weight of an object. The measurement results from balances are generally considered to be more precise compared to results from scales. Mechanical balances are the simplest type of balance, and use a lever and slide to indicate the measurement. Conventional balances are commonly used in offices, the jewelry industry, and in kitchens, and display results digitally, but are less precise than analytical balances. Analytical balances measure to a high degree of precision and accuracy (0.0001 g or better), and display results digitally. These balances have a cover with doors to prevent dust and airflow from affecting the measurement. Moisture balances analyze moisture content in a material sample, using infrared or halogen heat sources to dry the sample and then calculate the moisture content from the before- and after-drying weight, and display results digitally, on the balance, or transfer the information for display on a computer.
Mettler-Toledo manufactures precision instruments for use in research, scientific, and quality control labs for the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, and cosmetics industries. The company, founded in 1989, is headquartered in Switzerland.
