The Master Lock standard group lock box for lockout/tagout is a red powder-coated steel box lockable by up to 12 safety padlocks or hasps, with capacity for hundreds of loose keys, a metal handle for portability, and a slot in the lid for adding loose keys when the box is locked shut. The front of the box reads, "Lock Box Lock Out For Safety" in English, French, and Spanish. This box is part of a lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety procedure required at facilities where devices and energy sources need multiple-person authorization to be accessed safely during maintenance and repair.
The box measures 6 x 9-1/4 x 3-3/4 inches (H x W x D). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.)
Lockout/tagout (LOTO) safety procedures require that lockout devices meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 1910.147(c)(5) standards for quality assurance. LOTO devices use color, warning labels or tags, and sometimes a physical barrier to help prevent machine operation or power activation during maintenance and repair. Group lock boxes can provide the ability to use fewer padlocks on lockout devices that need to provide multiple-person authorization. Placing a single padlock's key into a group lock box with multiple locks on it allows for the single padlock to serve as a multiple-person authorization device. Repeating this process throughout a facility can simplify safety procedures, save time, and reduce the total number of padlocks maintained at that facility.
Master Lock manufactures padlocks, combination locks, and related security products. The company, founded in 1921, is headquartered in Milwaukee, WI.
