A caliper-type inside micrometer has a pair of jaws that can be inserted into the space to be measured from interior edge to edge. Tubular and rod inside micrometers are placed within the space to be measured, and are extended to fill the remaining span and measure the interior wall to wall.
Inside micrometers are commonly made of steel. Their measuring faces may have carbide tips for additional hardness and to help extend the life of the tool. They may also have a finish, such as nickel, to help resist corrosion.
When selecting the appropriate inside micrometer for an application, consider the material type, system of measurement, and maximum measurement.
