The maximum measurement specifies the smallest (minimum) and largest (maximum) dimension or hole diameter that the instrument can measure. For example, an inside micrometer with a maximum measurement of 2 to 3mm has a length of 2mm when fully collapsed, and can be extended to measure a span up to 3mm. A bore gauge with a maximum measurement of 2 to 3mm can fit in a hole that is 2mm in diameter or larger, and can be expanded to measure a hole diameter no larger than 3mm.
