Wire rope item diameter refers to the diameter of uncoated (also called bare) wire rope. Bare wire rope is without a finish or coating.
A wire rope must have a specific diameter and construction to be used with a pulley or drum. For example, wire rope with 1x7 or 1x19 class construction is not fatigue-resistant enough to be used with hoists. Generally, the larger the diameter of the wire rope and sheave size, the longer the service life of the rope, as the larger sheave requires less bending. A machine user's manual will indicate correct wire rope diameter to sheave size. Proper support and design in the sheave tread or groove is also essential for correct use. Inadequate sheave support and/or diameter may result in bending of wires that could produce diminished service life, or unsafe working conditions.
