The Hanna Instruments HI 96747C copper low range portable photometer measures copper content in water in the low range, has a calibration check function, automatic shutoff, an LCD screen, and on-screen instructions. The calibration check function (CalCheck) validates instrument performance. An automatic shutoff feature turns the meter off after 10 minutes of nonuse in measurement mode, and after one hour of nonuse in calibration mode, to help extend the life of the meter. Automated instructions on the LCD screen aid in routine operation. The meter is splashproof, and the lamp and filter are protected from dust and dirt by a transparent cup, making it suitable for field applications. The device uses a positive-locking system to help ensure consistent positioning of the cuvette. This photometer does not work in saltwater. Copper photometers measure copper content in drinking and surface water samples, and are commonly used in the water quality industry.
Range is 0.000 to 1.500 mg/L. Accuracy is + or - 0.010 mg/L, + or - 5% of reading at 25 degrees C. Resolution is 0.001 mg/L for measurement, and 0.01 mg/L for calibration and validation. Dimensions are 192 x 102 x 67 mm/7.6 x 4 x 2.6 inches (H x W x D), and the meter weighs 290 g (10 oz.). (H is height, the vertical distance from lowest to highest point; W is width, the horizontal distance from left to right; D is depth, the horizontal distance from front to back.) Power source is a 9V battery (included). A reaction between the reagent (sold separately) and copper in a sample causes a distinct purple color to appear, which is measured by the photometer. The meter uses an adaption of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)-approved bicinchoninate method.
Photometers measure the light intensity of solutions or surfaces. For solution testing, a sample and reagent are placed in a cuvette in the photometer. The photometer transmits light through the cuvette, and compares the intensity of the light that shines through to the amount of light that shines through a blank cuvette. The meter uses the difference to calculate the concentration of the test element. For surface testing, a surface is illuminated with white light, and the photometer measures the luminosity of the reflected light. Photometers are commonly used in water quality, agricultural, horticultural, and industrial applications to measure the amount of minerals and chemicals in samples, and for checking water and beverages, such as beer and wine, for consistency.
Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.
