The HI 96831 is a portable, water resistant, digital ethylene glycol refractometer that utilizes the measurement of refractive index to determine the percent volume and freezing point of ethylene glycol based coolants or antifreeze. The meter helps eliminate the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers, and is suitable for field or lab use. Samples are measured after a simple user calibration with deionized or distilled water and within 1.5 seconds the instrument measures the refractive index of the sample and converts it to percent volume or freezing point. The meter features Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC) between 0 and 40 degrees C/32 – 104 degrees F, and temperature is displayed (in C and F) simultaneously with the measurement on a large, dual-level LCD display along with icons for low power and other message codes. Auto-shut off feature turns the meter off automatically after three minutes of non use.
Volume % range is 0 to 100% + or – 0.2% with a resolution of 0.1%. Freezing point range is 0 to -50 degrees C (32 to -58 degrees F) + or – 0.5 degrees C (+ or – 1.0 degrees F). Temperature range is 0 to 80 degrees C (32 to 176 degrees F) + or – 0.3 degrees C (+ or – 0.5 degrees F) with a resolution of 0.1 degrees C (0.1 degrees F). The device operates on a 9V battery. Dimensions are 19.2 x 10.2 x 6.7 cm (H x W x D), and weighs 420 g.
Ethylene Glycol is an organic compound commonly used as an automotive antifreeze, and a precursor to polymers. Ethylene Glycol refractometers utilize the measurement of refractive index to determine the percent volume and freezing point of ethylene glycol based coolants or antifreeze. They are used by researchers, manufacturers, and individuals.
Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 standards.
