The Frey Scientific 528339 Student Stirring Hot Plate has a one-piece aluminum top for heating glassware and contents to 400 degrees C and stirring between 100 to 1200rpm, and includes a round 4.5-inch diameter hot plate that is durable and crack- and chip-resistant, a bi-metallic thermostat for reliable temperature control, speed and temperature control knobs, a micro-switch under top plate that activates with a weight of approximately 50 grams (1.75oz.) and ceases when mixing vessel is removed, and a built-in support rod holder with locking knob. Hot plates are used to heat glassware and contents in laboratories.
This hot plate features a compact design to save bench space. A motor and magnet provides reliable and consistent stirring when activated by the weight sensitive micro-switch under the top plate. The heater boils 300mL of water in 12 minutes. The built-in support rod holder with locking knob at rear holds a standard threaded support rod to suspend instrumentation such as clamps and probes. The unit operates in environments from 4 to 40 degrees C (39 to 104 degrees F). The hot plate comes with a 1.5" (3.8cm) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coated stir bar and a 72" (234cm) detachable, 3-wire cord and plug.

Researchers, professionals and hobbyists use hot plates to heat a variety of liquids and solutions in chemistry, food and beverage, biology, lab, and home applications. Hotplates can have either a digital or an analog display, and can show temperature range, or stirring speed. Hot plate surfaces are commonly made of ceramic-glass or stainless steel, and have coatings such as porcelain. They come in a variety of dimensions. Some units can work with stirrers that can be supported with clamps and rods.
