Frey Scientific digital stereo microscope has an integrated digital camera with a CCD (charge-coupled device) sensor and USB output to display three-dimensional images on a computer or projector. The microscope has a binocular viewing head with 45-degree vertical inclination, and 360-degree rotation capability to ease eye strain and provide a more comprehensive view. The head has 55.0 to 75.0mm interpupillary adjustment for individual eye spacing, and paired 10.0x widefield eyepieces with 10.0 to 40.0x zoom achromatic objectives to provide a range of magnification and color correction of magnified images. Each eyepiece has diopter adjustment capabilities, with lenses that are parfocalled and parcentered to keep the specimen in focus and centered when the magnification is changed. Zoom control knobs with a slip clutch, rack-and-pinion gearing, and adjustable tension provide sharp focus, help prevent damage to slides or lenses, and avoid focus “drift.” The microscope has upper 12.0V 15.0 watt halogen illumination with variable intensity control and lower 12.0V 10.0 watt halogen lighting for bright, hot illumination, with four-position light control for upper or lower only, or both off. The microscope has a built-in camera with a CMOS sensor that provides 1.3 megapixel image resolution at 1,600.0 x 1,200.0. The camera includes a USB port for connecting to a computer (USB cable included), and Motic Images software for viewing, capturing, measuring, and storing images. (Camera requires a PC with Windows XP or above or Mac OS X for operation.) The stage includes a frosted glass plate to allow light to pass through, and a reversible black and white plate for contrast with specimens. The stage also has locked-on clips for securing slides, and a blue filter for transmitted light. A post mount with a locking collar allows up-and-down adjustment of the viewing head to 330.0mm/13.0” (H) to accommodate different size specimens on the stage. (H is height, the vertical distance from the lowest to highest point.). The microscope has an all-metal frame for durability, and includes a three-wire grounded cord and plug, calibration slide, rubber eyeshields, instructions, and a vinyl dust cover for storage. Vinyl resists oil, has low moisture absorption, and is non-conductive.

Microscopes are instruments used to enhance the resolution of an object or image. Types include compound, stereo, or digital. Microscopes can control magnification through a fixed focus, or through a range of adjustments. They can also utilize LED, fluorescent, and mirror light sources to help control viewing capabilities.
