Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), better known as mad cow disease, is a neurodegenerative, fatal condition in cattle. Consuming BSE-infected beef is believed to be the cause of a similar condition in humans, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. In this experiment, students examine simulated PCR products from several feed mills, to determine any possible violations of a 1997 ban which ended the practice of including animal parts in cattle feed. Kit includes: instructions and Ready-to-Load dye samples for 12 gels. All you need: electrophoresis apparatus, power supply, automatic micropipet and tips, balance, microwave or hot plate, visualization system. EDVO-Kit 117-B contains pre-digested DNA samples ready for electrophoresis sufficient for twelve (12) agarose gels with the use of InstaStain Methylene Blue. Reagent quantities are based upon the use of Horizontal gel electrophoresis apparatus, Model M12 and sample volumes aliquoted at 40 �l each.
