Product Description
The Union Butterfield 4587 uncoated, high-speed steel taper pin reamer has straight flutes and a round shank with a square end, and is used for reaming holes intended to receive taper pins. The straight flutes make small, circular, and precise enlargements to through holes (extending through the workpiece) and blind holes (with only one opening). This reamer is useful for uninterrupted cuts in general-purpose applications.
High-speed steel (HSS) is a common, general-purpose steel for cutting tools and is compatible with a variety of materials. With no coating or surface treatment, this uncoated tool can be used on a broad range of materials, and provides an economical alternative to coated tools. The square end shank helps to minimize rotation in the tool holder. This tool can be used in drill presses, screw machines, or lathes.
The number of flutes on a reamer depends on the cutting diameter of the tool. Reamers in this series with taper pin sizes 0 to 8 have six flutes and those with taper pin sizes 9 and 10 have eight flutes.
Reamers are used to finish existing holes. When holes are created using common applications such as drilling or punching, they often have minute imperfections. Their roundness may be flawed, or their diameters may be slightly smaller than required. Reamers are made to exacting tolerances, so they can correct such errors and create precisely round holes with exact dimensions. Reaming is often used before tapping screw threads.
