Product Description

The B&K Precision XLN8018 series programmable linear DC power supply unit provides a constant source of DC voltage and current for powering and testing electronic devices in research and development, production, and laboratory applications. The power supply unit (PSU) has one variable output that provides adjustable DC voltage up to 80V and current up to 18 amp. The unit has an auxiliary output with a fixed voltage of 5VDC and current of 1 amp for powering an additional device. The LED screen shows voltage and current readings simultaneously and is readable in low light. The PSU's internal memory can store up to 10 operating states for future recall. An analog rotary encoder knob and numeric keypad on the front panel provide fine and coarse adjustment of the voltage and current output with a range of precision. Up to four PSUs can be connected in series to supply more voltage, or they can be connected in parallel to supply more current. The PSU can be connected to a computer using the RS-485 or USB interface (cable sold separately) for remote control, and the RS-485 interface allows up to 31 PSUs to be connected for simultaneous remote control from a computer. A software download is included for testing applications and for emulating the PSU's front-panel controls. An analog remote control terminal allows external control of the PSU, and a remote-sensing terminal compensates for up to 2V of voltage drop in the load. A list mode lets the operator store up to 150 command sequence in the PSU's internal memory for future execution, and it offers timer-controlled output from 1 second to 100 hours. The voltage and current slew rate can be adjusted for "soft starting" of loads. A lock feature disables the front-panel keypad to help prevent accidental input. The PSU can sit on a workbench or be mounted in a rack (mounting hardware included). A power cord with a three-prong plug is included for connecting the PSU to a grounded outlet, and solder-type and screw-type mounting blocks are included for connecting to the device to be tested. A cooling fan helps prevent overheating, with front-to-back airflow for high-density rack mounting. Built-in overvoltage and overcurrent protection helps prevent damage to the PSU and the device under test. The B&K Precision XLN8018-GL model also has a GPIB and LAN interface for automatic test equipment (ATE) applications.

Power supply units (also known as PSUs, AC power supplies, DC power supplies, and battery eliminators) provide AC or DC voltage to power or test devices such as tools, appliances, and electronic components. The PSU draws energy from a line source such as a wall socket and converts it to a constant, specified amount of voltage or current that is then outputted to a connected device. In general, a power supply unit will be classified as either a linear PSU (also known as a linear regulation or line-frequency PSU) or a switched PSU (also known as a switching-mode power supply, SMPS, or switcher). Typically, a linear PSU has a simpler design and provides a faster transient response time and less electrical interference and noise than a switched PSU. A switched PSU is often smaller, lighter, and more efficient than a linear PSU and generates less heat. The transient response time of a PSU indicates how quickly the PSU can resume the desired constant output after a sudden change in input. Ripple voltage or current indicates how much unfiltered noise and AC voltage or current is present at the output of a filtered power supply operated at full load. The temperature coefficient is the percent average change in output voltage per degree centigrade of change in ambient temperature. Fuses, current limiters, and other forms of overload protection can be built into the PSU to help protect against voltage spikes or short-circuiting.
