The 3M™ NX Hook and Loop Paper Dust-Free Disc is ideal for use with dual action or random orbital sanders on a variety of substrates where loading is a concern. Constructed of aluminum oxide abrasive on intermediate-weight paper (D-weight for grades 40, P60, P80; C-weight for grades P100–P800), the disc offers aggressive cut and long life, and is well suited for high production operations as well as general purpose applications on paint, primer, wood, metal, plastic, and fiberglass. An open coat construction and a load resistant coating help prevent clogging when working with softwoods or paint. The disc features a hook-and-loop backing that provides ease of attachment and reuse, and the durable paper backing stands up to extended use with dual action or random orbital sanders.
NX discs feature an open coat that allows the disc to continue cutting even when sanding softwoods, paints, and other materials that would, otherwise, clog the surface of the disc and hinder sanding ability. In open coat construction the abrasive grains are spaced slightly apart so that dust and debris have an outlet rather than loading the disc. Additionally, the open coat feature provides a more aggressive cut than a comparable closed coat abrasive of the same grade. A load-resistant coating further prevents wood dust, paint particles, and other debris from prematurely clogging the surface of the disc, optimizing cut-rate and disc life.
Aluminum oxide is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its fast cut-rate and long life. This mineral makes a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges, whereas traditional natural abrasives dull more quickly. Due to its fast cut-rate, hardness, and strength, it is widely used in grinding applications in addition to sanding and finishing applications. Aluminum oxide is suitable for a wide variety of materials in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys.
Coated abrasive discs come in a variety of forms to fit various power tools and disc pads. Hook and Loop sanding discs are designed to be used with a random orbital sander, a handheld sanding machine that rotates the disc in a random pattern to prevent swirl marks from forming on the surface of the workpiece. The sander is fitted with a disc pad (or backup pad), to which the sanding disc is attached. Hook-and-loop discs are quick and easy to change when switching from one grade to another, and can be reused again and again until worn out (whereas adhesive-backed discs are typically discarded after one use because the adhesive backing will not re-adhere a second time).
