The 3M™ Flexible Foam Sanding Sponge is a highly flexible abrasive pad that provides an excellent finish, exceptional conformability, and high resiliency, making it ideal for sanding wood, paint, metal, plastic, and drywall when conformability is needed for a consistent finish. It is ideally suited to numerous applications in woodworking as well as the transportation and aerospace industries. This durable and reusable soft-back foam can be shaped as desired by cutting, bending, folding, or twisting. It folds to fit crevasses and will bend and twist to get into corners and other hard-to-reach areas without wrinkling caused by thicker pads. This combination of flexibility and close conformability provides superior access to contours, profiles, creases, corners, and curves. Common applications are touchup and repair of furniture legs, moldings, and irregular shapes. The sponge also produces a consistent scratch and provides uniform pressure to minimize finger marks and reduce the possibility of sanding through finish coats.

The sponges are approximately 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches (width x length) and 3/16" thick. A medium sponge produces a finish comparable to abrasive grades 120-180, and a fine sponge is comparable to grades 320-400. The super fine sponge is comparable to grades 500-600, and the ultra fine sponge corresponds to grades 800-1000.

3M™ Sanding Sponge Applications

The 3M Flexible Foam Sanding Sponge provides professional performance in a range of applications in woodworking, transportation, and aerospace. When the goal is to bring out the beauty and structure of whitewood that has contours, curves, or crevices, use this sponge to upgrade or smooth the surface, reduce raised wood fibers, and promote better penetration of the stain into the wood surface. It's also handy for touch-up and repair operations to remove splinters, pencil marks, dried glue residue, or scratches and dents from assembly and handling. When a whitewood sealer is used to protect the wood against moisture, the sanding sponge may be used for scuff sanding prior to paint application.

Re-work and repair operations in transportation and aerospace require scuffing of the clear coat without removing any of the underlying paint. Let the flexible foam sanding sponge be your go-to product for touch-ups and scuffing on contours, edges, and hard to reach areas. Grades of fine or super fine are ideal starting points for scuffing finishes, while medium and fine grades are suitable for whitewood sanding.

 

Achieving Optimal Finish with 3M™ Flexible Foam Sanding Sponges

Whitewood Smoothing and Finishing:

  • Hand sand imperfections or rough spots from the workpiece with a medium grade sponge before the final finish.
  • To further refine the finish, use the fine grade sponge.

Sealer Sanding and General Finish Sanding:

  • To provide a level surface and good adhesion of the sealer or topcoat, scuff sand the workpiece with a fine or super fine grade sponge.
  • The grade used must be fine enough so that the topcoat will fill in the scratches.
  • Where a finer scratch pattern is needed, use ultra fine.

Flexible and Comfortable with Reliable Performance

The 3M Flexible Foam Sanding Sponge features a unique microreplicated comfort grip texture on the backing for a soft, comfortable, and easier grip than with smooth backed sponges. The textured backing even interlocks with itself when folded to reduce slippage. The flexing action of the sponge helps it release particles to reduce loading, and this sponge can be washed and re-used for the life of the abrasive. It will not split like paper backed coated abrasives sometimes do, and can be used in dry or wet applications. This sponge is not only comfortable—it also boasts a cut-rate that is typically faster than other sponge-backed abrasives, for further improved productivity and reduced operator fatigue.

This sanding sponge contains aluminum oxide abrasive mineral, which is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its cut-rate and long life. Aluminum oxide mineral is a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges in use, whereas traditional abrasives such as garnet quickly wear down with use. Due to its high cut-rate, hardness, strength, and low heat retention, aluminum oxide mineral is widely used for sanding and finishing applications. Aluminum oxide is suitable on a wide variety of substrates in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys.
