The 3M™ Stikit™ Gold Paper Dust-Free Disc Roll 216U is designed for convenience, combining 5-hole dust-free aluminum oxide discs with a handy adhesive backing ready for quick and easy attachment to a Stikit dust-free backup pad on a random orbital sander (both sold separately). The disc roll makes the discs easy to grab while eliminating the use of disc liners. Stikit 216U dust-free discs are up to the task when loading would otherwise burden the sanding process. When used with a vacuum system, the 5-hole design not only resists loading, but also reduces unhealthy working conditions due to air-borne dust. Open coat construction and a load-resistant coating prevent dust and debris from congesting the surface of the disc and its cutting points. The dust-free design makes these discs well-suited for work on clear coats, hardwood, paint, finish prep/repair, defect repair/leveling, primer, softwood, and topcoats.
Stikit™ discs are designed to handle a wide range of sanding and finishing needs. These high-quality, coated abrasive products come ready to use with a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on the backside so they conveniently press on to the backup pad, and remove cleanly, leaving an uncontaminated surface for the next disc. A Stikit dust-free disc should be used in conjunction with a Stikit dust-free backup pad (also called a disc pad and sold separately) that is attached to a random orbital sander. Stikit disc rolls are a roll of adhesive-backed discs that are convenient to tear off one at a time, and reduce costs by eliminating liners.
Loading occurs when wood or paint dust clogs the surface of the disc and the abrasive points, which can quickly make the disc ineffective. Open coat construction means the abrasive grains are spaced so that dust and debris can collect in the spaces rather than loading the disc. Additionally, the open coat feature provides a more aggressive cut than a comparable closed coat abrasive of the same grade, for faster results.
The 5-hole pattern dust-management system uses a series of evenly-spaced holes in the abrasive, that are aligned with the holes in the disc pad. Suction (vacuum) is drawn through the holes to help collect the dust from the air and on the workpiece, for improved working conditions and increasing productivity.
Aluminum oxide is a popular choice among industrial professionals because of its fast cut-rate and long life. This mineral makes a tough, durable abrasive that self-fractures to expose fresh cutting edges in use, whereas traditional abrasives such as garnet quickly wear down with use. Due to its fast cut-rate, hardness, and strength, it is widely used in grinding applications in addition to sanding and finishing applications. Aluminum oxide is suitable for a wide variety of materials in both woodworking and metalworking, including ferrous alloys.
For more than a century, 3M has applied innovation and technology to improving our customers’ lives and supporting their business goals. Today the company, from its headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota, serves industrial and commercial customers and consumers in nearly 200 countries. Abrasive Systems products, including a complete line of coated abrasives, microfinishing and microreplicated abrasives, and hardware accessories, provide the finishing touch for almost any surface conditioning application. The 3M brand, across thousands of products, represents consistency, superior quality, and value.
